Which IRST RAID driver will let me load Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit on Asus Z97-WS and RAID 1 array?

$

I have assembled a computer from new parts, including an Asus Z97-WS motherboard (Intel Z97 chipset) and two Western Digital VelociRaptor 1TB (WD1000CHTZ) hard disk drives. I have set the BIOS to RAID, and with IRST created a RAID 1 volume using the two hard disk drives. The drives are plugged into the SATA ports on the motherboard controlled by the Intel chipset.

When I try to load Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit, at what used to be the F6 stage, where one loads RAID drivers, I cannot find an IRST RAID driver that Windows will recognize as a proper driver. I often get the error code 0x80300001. Without the proper driver, Windows does not recognize the RAID volume as a bootable device, and therefore refuses to install Windows on it.

I have tried every driver on the disc that Asus supplies with the MB, the latest drivers from the Asus website, and every latest/current Intel IRST RAID driver I could find on Intel.com. None permits me to load Windows on the RAID array. POST sees both drives, and I could load Windows to either drive as a lone drive (after breaking the RAID array). IRST says the array is normal and bootable, though BIOS does not recognize the array as a bootable device--which is natural, since I haven't found a driver for it yet.

I would GREATLY appreciate a solution to this problem.

Thank you,

Eric

Strange warning message about Rapid Storage Technology

About 5-10 minutes after Windows is loaded, there's a message showing up in Taskbar, that reads "Your system is reporting one or more events and data may be at risk".

When i click on it, the Intel Rapid Storage Technology application opens, where in "Status" section is written:

Your system ir reporting one or more events, and data may be at risk.

Your system is configured to enable advanced SATA features for optimal power management and increased storage performance.

Refer to the details below for more information.

I cannot see more information, I checked Event logs also, but can't find anything unusual.

I have ASUS Z97M-Plus and Samsung 840 EVO 256 GB drive and enabled RAPID mode.

Why I keep receiving this message? Should i be concerned? Thanks!

Intel RST Messages Meaning

$

Intel RST gives me messages that an unknown disk on unknown port was removed, then tells me that a disk on controller 0, port 0 has been added. I do not have the exact wording, because the messages go away too fast. They do not seem to be warnings and no errors are reported. Can someone tell me exactly what this means? Is the hard drive starting to fail? I can open RST after I get the messages, and the hard drive seems to be OK. This drive is a SATA 2TB internal hard drive. There is an SSD drive (system drive) on port 1 of controller 0.

Also, I tried to set up e-mail notifications mainly to get the exact messages and to see if this problem was occurring at time when I'm not at the computer. However the test message always fails. It does not give a reason, just says it failed. I have double checked the settings and they are all correct. My SMTP requires port 465. I also tried port 25 and that resulted in "unable to connect". I would think that the SMTP server would require a password, wouldn't it? Yet there's no place to enter that on the form. Is there no other way to have this thing save all messages somewhere?

Thanks!

HM65 Express problem with Windows 8.1 - audio not recognized

Hi all,

I've got an Asus U31SD laptop, and have recently installed Windows 8.1. For some reason since the first boot the onboard audio (Realtek, I believe) is not detected in device manager, and I get an error under "High Definition Audio Controller" saying "The device could not start". Needless to say I've got no audio.

I think I am missing some part of the chipset driver but don't know which one and how to install it.

I've tried formatting and reinstalling Win 8.1 several times, and immediately installing the "chipset driver" from the Asus website (or the newest version one from the Intel website) and the Intel MEI driver, and only afterwards installing the Realtek audio driver (again either from the Asus website or from Realtek website). The problem just persisted. Updating Windows with all available updates did not help either.

Note that under Windows 7 everything worked fine just a few days ago.

There also seems to be no option in BIOS to enable/disable the onboard audio.

I tired manually updating the driver of all components in device manager by pointing it to the most recent Windows 8.1 Intel drivers that I've downloaded, but this did not help.

Any help/ideas would be greatly appreciated!

H97 for Windows Server 2012

Built a box with H97 chipset and was planning on using it as a server.

Windows Server 2012 does not seem to recognize this chipset, and the on-board LAN adapter is not recognized. So crazy in 2014 what it feels like to have a "disconnected" machine. There seems to be no drivers out there except for Windows 7 and 8. What are the plans on developing Windows Server 2012 +/- r2 drivers for this chipset? Should it be recognized straight out of the box by Windows Server 2012? If so, then I guess I bought a brick. But there's really nothing out there that can help me figure this out.

I know I can ultimately just get a USB network adapter, but this is obviously a work around. I would rather figure out how to get the motherboard to work as is.

I hope someone can help.

Hi,

I want to use a 60GB SSD as a cache to my 1To HDD. But I am not able to setup the Intel Smart Response Technology.

I have a Windows 7 installation on Asrock Z77 Pro 3, Intel i5 3570K and a 1To HDD.

I installed a new 60GB SSD, and enabled the RAID mode in the bios.

But I am unable to access to the options in the "Intel Rapid Storage utility" to setup the SSD as a cache.

I looked on the net, and this forum, some things seems related but nothing seems to be working... Can you help me ?

Thanks,

NoWiS.

IRST Install Fails

$

I have a few different model HP Workstations, xw4600, Z200 and Z220.

On a few small number of these machines I have a problem installing the Intel Rapid Storage Technology Software.

I can load the driver on the affected machines thru Device Manager, my guess is it's the application that is bombing out during the install. It reaches about 95% before initiating a rollback.

It happens with different versions of the driver

11.1.0.1006

12.9.0.1001

I've attached copies of the log files if anyone is interesting in taking a look.

I'm not sure what else to do, if I rebuild the machine IRST installs fine. A drastic measure to fix an app that won't install.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Robert

Does the Intel USB 3.0 driver for 7-series chipsets support xHCI hand-off?

$

Hi all,

Intel’s 7-Series chipset supports USB 3.0.  On Windows 7, you need to install Intel’s USB 3.0 driver to enable USB 3.0 functionality.  The driver can be found here:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?DwnldID=21129

My question is simple but I suspect the answer might be esoteric:  Does this driver support xHCI hand-off?

More info for those who are interested:

The BIOS normally "owns" the USB 3.0 (xHCI) controller when you first power on the PC.  Eventually the OS loads.  Lets assume the OS supports USB 3.0.  If the OS also supports xHCI hand-off, it will obtain exclusive control of the USB 3.0 controller from the BIOS.  If it doesn't support xHCI hand-off, bad things will happen (i.e. the BIOS and OS may try to use the controller at the same time).

Now Windows 7 doesn't natively support USB 3.0.  However, the Intel driver enables USB 3.0 support.  But,does it also enable xHCI hand-off support?

The question is important because of this:

ehci-xhci-handoff.jpg

These are special USB settings in my PC's BIOS.  The BIOS manual says this:

My thinking is that, if the Intel USB 3.0 driver has xHCI hand-off support, then I should disable the XHCI Hand-off setting in the BIOS.  While we're at it, seems obvious that the EHCI Hand-off setting also needs to be disabled.  Then again, my thinking could be totally wrong... so I'm hoping for some definitive answers on this from the experts! :-)

What's the difference between Intel(R) 8 Series Chipset... and Intel(R) 8 Series/C220 chipset...?

I recently install upgrade the IDE ATA/ATAPI controller drive from Intel(R) 8 Series 2 port Serial ATA Storage Controller & Intel(R) 8 Series 4 port Serial ATA Storage Controller drive to Intel(R) 8 Series Chipset Family SATA AHCI Controller drive so that I can be able to install Intel Rapid Storage Technology. But my Universal Serial Bus Controller says that I'm useing Intel(R) 8 Series/C220 series USB EHCI.

My question is why it works well with Intel(R) 8 Series Chipset drive even I'm not using Intel(R) 8 Series/C220 Chipset drive?

What's the difference between Intel(R) 8 Series/C220 Chipset Family SATA AHCI Controller drive and  Intel(R) 8 Series Chipset Family SATA AHCI Controller drive?

And why there are two IDE ATA/ATAPI controller drives before I upgrade it?

By the way, I'm using HM87 chipset.

For who ever answer these questions:

Thank you.

Z97 USB port routing

$

Hello,

I need to use 2 USB 2.0 devices using each 280Mbps at the same time. In plain English, I need to have access to 2 USB 2.0 controllers.

Z87 motherboards (MB) BIOSs offered the ability of routing individual USB ports to XHCI or EHCI controllers (using the "Intel USB 3.0 mode" in manual mode). Of course, it was very convenient for my needs.

I tried out several models of Z97 motherboards (Asus, AsRock, Gigabyte), and the Intel USB 3.0 manual mode disappeared. The only way we found out to have access to the 2 USB 2.0 controllers is to disable USB 3.0 controller.

Is it a limitation of Z97 chipset or MB manufacturers didn't implement this feature yet ?

Is it possible to fine tune the USB 3.0 Host Controller Switch Driver to force a specific USB routing strategy ?

Is there any way to force USB ports or devices routing to a USB 2.0 controller under Windows 7 pro ? Or maybe under Windows 8.1, using MS USB 3.0 driver ?

Thanks.

Can I uninstall Intel Rapid Storage Technology?

Hi, I'm using Windows 8.1 x64. My laptop is a Lenovo Y510P with 1TB HDD and a SSD of 24GB in the M.2 NGFF interface for caching. Since my laptop uses Expresscache to manage the SSD, and not IRST...

Do I need to still have installed the Intel Rapid Storage Technology?

If not, I'd like to uninstall it. I just wanna make sure that IRST is not needed if Expresscache is the software that controls the cache thing and the SSD.

Thanks!

Intel's Rapid Storage Technology

$

I built a new system for a relative using the H87-G43 MSI board.  I have set up a SSD 64 GB to be used as a Caching disk using Intel's Rapid Storage Technology.

I followed the set up procedure which required a BIOS change to RAID Mode before the OS was installed.  So I have one 500 GB drive that is  accelerated  and the 64 GB SSD that  is being used as the caching drive.

No errors or BSOD's when booting, I had to enable the drive in the Intel console for this(it sees the drive just fine) to work.  The Intel Rapid Storage Technology(Intel SRT) really improves boot times over just using the mechanical drive. It is not a performance issue I am having just a reporting issue I think.

The question I have is about how Windows is reporting the drives in Device manager and computer management.

In device manager only the 500 GB drive is shown and it is shown as a SCSI device.

In computer management only the 500 GB drive is shown.

Both drives are shown in the Intel management console for this technology.

The computer is running fine and zippy, I am just a bit concerned about the 500GB drive (SATA) being reported as SCSI.  Funny I downloaded SPECCY and it shows it as a SCSI drive as well using a 40 pin cable.

Any help, thoughts, ideas, or experience with this technology that could enlighten me would be very helpful. :confused2:

Thanks

Replacing a Raid 0 by a single SSD

$

I would like to replace a Raid 0 of two 1TB hard drives running from a Intel ICH10R controller, installed in a motherboard Asus P6X58D Premiun and relpace it with a SSD.

I plan to clone the Raid 0 with Drive Wire Universal hard drive adapter and Apricorn's EZ GIG IV software, then remove both hard drives from the computer and boot up from the SSD,

my question is: will the SSD boot up from the Intel ICH10R controller with the same Raid setting?, if it boots up may I install both hard drives again, boot from the SSD and delete the Raid and run both hard drives as JBOD?

I don't want to go through the Win 7 and all the applications installation  again, are there any risks in doing this?, I can't find information about how the Intel ICH10R works when creating or deleting a Raid, does it store the the Raid config in the controller? or the config just resides in the Raid or single disk alone.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Thank you.

Intel Management Engine Driver? Intel VGA Driver?

Is the Intel Management Engine Driver necessary ?  If so why?  I am using the MSI H87-G43 Intel board paired with the I3-4130 CPU.  Is the Intel VGA driver necessary as well? I will only be using the integrated graphics on the CPU HD 4400.

Any help would be appreciated thanks.
