I would like to report an issue I am having with my computer.  In short, when I install a second OS, the whole USB sub-system under the original OS (Windows 7) is disabled.  I would like to help someone at Intel reproduce the problem, so that a fix can be found.

Here is output of the System Identification Utility:

I have reproduced this problem two different ways.  The first was like this:

  • Install Windows 7.  Use the standard Windows "Disk Management" utility to free 100GB on the C: drive for a Linux installation. (Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Create and format hard disk partitions.)
  • Use the UNetbootin utility (UNetbootin - Homepage and Downloads) to install version 12.04 of Ubuntu Linux on the new partition using a USB thumb drive.
  • Select the Windows 7 installation from the GRUB2 boot menu.
  • The USB keyboard and mouse seem to be dead.  (They are unresponsive, and there are no lights on the keyboard or from the bottom of the optical mouse.)
  • Using a Chrome Remote Desktop login, I am able to log into Windows and verify that all USB activity (plugging in the above mentioned thumb drive again, etc) is ignored by the OS.

Note that everything works fine under Ubuntu, and Windows works fine too if I remove the Ubuntu partition and replace GRUB with the Windows bootloader.

I first suspected that GRUB was somehow initializing the hardware into an unexpected state and causing trouble that way.  So I tried this, instead:

  • I installed a second hard drive, and then installed Ubuntu on that.
  • This installed GRUB2 on the C: drive again, so I used "bootrec /fixmbr" and "bootrec /fixboot" from a rescue disk command-line to reinstall the standard Windows bootloader.
  • From this point, all is fine until I tell the UEFI firmware to boot from the second drive.  Again, Linux works fine, but I get the same "broken USB" behavior from Windows the next time I boot from the C: drive.  This happens even if I power off the computer completely, including pulling the power plug, before attempting to boot into Windows!

So why am I posting here?  Well, I noticed that I never had trouble with Windows when booting in safe mode.  And from experimentation, it seems that all it takes to boot successfully is to disable the Intel® HD Graphics 4600 driver.  (I don't have a discrete graphics card.)  Note that I am using the latest driver and BIOS versions.

I welcome any follow-up questions and would love to help get to the bottom of this.

Many thanks,

Sam Bishop

mSATA SSD only gets recognized after resuming from sleep

Hi there, I have a very strange problem. I have a Dell E7440 with a 128GB SSD and a WWAN module. I replaced this WWAN module with another SSD (Crucial M500 120GB) so I can dualboot Ubuntu. The weird thing is, however, the second drive is recognized in the BIOS, it's recognized by the Intel RAID Utility (right after the BIOS) but in both Linux and Windows, the drive is recognized after resuming from sleep mode. Since the original SSD was an mSATA SSD with a mSATA to SATA converter I swapped them. Again, the same result.

It is hard to see if there are people with the same issues, because there are many people with issues with resuming from sleep, but in almost every case that's about drives disappearing after resuming from sleep. Does anyone here know if this is fixable?

It has an Intel 8 Series Chipset Family SATA AHCI Controller. (I put the SATA mode on AHCI, but AHCI or RAID didnt matter)

Intel Rapid Storage Technology installation error

I cleaned install Windows 8.1 on my laptop(Samsung NP-550P5C-S04-IN)(Intel Core i5 3210M).

I had downloaded the drivers before-hand. My first issue arose when the setup failed to detect the pre-install driver. Since, the HDD was visible, I continiued with the Setup. After installing WIndows, when I triied to install RST, I got an error message saying installation ended prematurely, as it doesn't support the platform. It is the latest 13.1.0.1058 version from the download center.

Earlier, I was able to install the previously released  12.9.0.1001 version without any issues(both the F6 and the exe version),. So, why isn't the newer driver incompatible?

Is it normal that using the Raid Controller slows down boot time and waking up from sleep considerably?

I got this new Z87-Pro MB from Asus with an i7-4770K and had the same results with a H87M-E board.

My problem is the Intel RAID controller turned my insanely fast computer into a very slow to react machine.

I use an SSD as primary HD to boot and I wanted to create a RAID 1 for storage with 2 WD Black 2TB HDs.

All HDs are plugged in the Sata ports of the same Intel RAID controller in RAID mode, but I can create an array with only the 2 HDs and leave the SSD to boot. I have to put the SSD on the controller in RAID mode since there is only one Intel controller on the board, but it doesn't seem to affect the speed of the SSD at all when benchmarking it.

If I use a Western Digital 2TB Hard Disk and the Intel controller is in RAID mode, boot time slows down by about 13 seconds and waking up from sleep takes 17 seconds instead of about 4 seconds.

I don't even have to put the HDs in the array. Just plugging them makes my BIOS screen show up after 24 seconds before handing off to the OS instead of showing the screen much sooner (this is when not in UEFI because of course when I tested with UEFI, BIOS handoff was faster even if still much slower when a 2TB disk is plugged).

If I remove the HD or use a 1TB Western Digital Black, the delay is much shorter. This is normal since the 1TB is ready much faster than the 2TB ones.

I know that WD 2TB and higher Black HDs have a long time to ready, but I don't understand why Intel controller has to slow everything down and keep me locked for 17 seconds before I am able to resume for sleep. This is totally unacceptable in today's world of "instant on" that my desktop takes 17 seconds to resume when my laptop takes not even a second. Why can't I use these disks as data disks without having all the computer so tied to them that it can't resume operation before they are completely ready ? They are not even boot disks and are not even formatted! Could the computer just boot or resume while it starts to spin?

If I use the SSD only, boot time is less than 10 seconds with UEFI (without the fast startup hibernate file gimmick of Windows 8.1) and resume is less than 4 seconds too (I don't know exactly because my monitor takes a few seconds to come back).

If I still use the same setup (1 or 2 2TB Hds) but using AHCI instead of the controller being in RAID mode, then boot time is 13 seconds faster and waking up from sleep is less than 4 seconds.

So it is really plugging one or two of these 2TB HDs when the controller is in RAID mode even if the disk is not used nor configured or even if I configure everything and initialize the array that slows everything down.

The effect is much less important with the 1TB HD.

I reproduced it with any of the 4 2TB I have. Some are FAEX and others FZEX models, it doesn't make a difference. Plugging any of them creates the problem.

But if I use AHCI, the controller never waits as much, 13 seconds less in fact!

It is not a driver problem because I can see the handoff of the BIOS to the OS clearly by looking at the BIOS screen appearing only after 24 seconds when the HDs are plugged. Also, I don't understand why even if it needed to detect the drives for longer, it would resume from sleep in 13 seconds more time too and only if the controller is in RAID mode.

I tried all possible combinations of software too for the resume from sleep problem (with or without Intel Rst).

Any light on this issue? Intel, you should consider that today's computers are instant on when designing your next RAID controller. I fear it is something that can't be fixed and unfortunately my dream computer turned into a nightmare slow turtle and I will have to create a costly external NAS for storage to avoid this issue.

Yes WD is to blame for making such a slow to be ready drive (I think they brag about it that it spins up slower for reliability), but I am not sure why AHCI could resume even if the drive isn't spinning fully but not RAID. You are afraid they would drop from array, maybe?

Error with Intel Rapid Storage Technology Version 13.1.0.1058

I am getting an error when I try to activate the RST GUI on my system.   I have four Blu-Ray DVD drives attached.  If I remove the SATA connections to three of the drives the GUI will start fine.  For normal operation I need to have all four Blu-Ray drives attached.   The problem also impacts the ability of the RST drive monitor process to run.  Which is my main concern.  Without the RAID monitor running I will not be alerted if the the RAID set fails.   The drives are in mirrored pair.

I know this same setup work with an earlier version of the RAID driver.   The system comparison document shows a working version and a comparison of my system when it was at version 12.xxx.xxx.xxx of the RST utility.   The results were the same with version 12.

I get the following two errors in the Windows Event Log.  I am not sure if the XML or Friendly text is preferred so I have both embedded.

Series 9 board - USB Problems with Digitial Audio Workstation

I have tried two different manufacturers of the Z97 chipset, Gigabyte Z97 UD7 and MSI Z97 Gaming 7, both have high latency values for USB external audio interfaces.

My old Z68 board had much better performance than this new Series 9.

Is this problem due to the errata listed in the link below?

http://www.intel.com/content/dam/www/public/us/en/documents/specification-updates/9-series-chipset-pch-spec-update.pdf

I'm really disappointed with the results of Series 9, for use with audio workstations.

Is the Intel Management Engine Driver necessary ?  If so why?  I am using the MSI H87-G43 Intel board paired with the I3-4130 CPU.  Is the Intel VGA driver necessary as well? I will only be using the integrated graphics on the CPU HD 4400.

Any help would be appreciated thanks.

Intel Rapid Storage Technology

Is anyone using Windows 7 to backup and restore a PC using Intel Rapid Storage Technology? I am using a a 32GB SSD to accelerate the main 1TB Hard drive. I am not sure how to proceed here, I don't want to experiment, I am looking for someone who is using a caching disk and how they go about backing and restoring in windows 7. It seems like the Intel Rapid Storage Technology ads a level of complexity that is less than ideal. Possibly It might have been better to spend the extra money and go with just a SSD rather than trying to save money and add extra layers of work.

Any help or insight would be appreciate

Hi,

I just put a SSD on my laptop and I want to have IRST working but I did something wrong intalling/updating, and now I'm stuck.

Can't remove old program, Tried to install earlier version says aa newer ver. is installed. Newer versions say "This computer does not meet minimum requirements for installing this software".

When i boot Windows a message appears saying "This computer doesn't have IRST enabled".

Would also like to know if it's possible to use IRST file in SSD instead of Express Cache iSSD..

Thanks.

HDD click (excessive load-unload cycles)

Two of my HDDs are clicking and have an excessive load-unload cycles.

I'm running 2x Samsung F3 1TB (HD103SJ) in RAID-0 using Z97 chipset Sata 3 ports.

My MB is a ASRock Z97 Extreme6, HDDs firmware is 1AJ10001. MB Bios is P1.33.

I had 13.1.0.1058 RST driver and installed 12.9.2.1000 but the issue persisted.

I have Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit running on a Samsung 830 Series 256GB SSD, I also have two more HDDs, one Seagate 3TB and one Toshiba 160GB... No issues with these drives.

On my previous setup I was using these HDDs on a X58 chipset Sata 2 ports, also in RAID-0 mode, Intel RST 11 and got no issues.

I think the drives are going idle too fast, because when I need to open or seek for something on the drive, the click starts.

I don't know if this is a BIOS problem or a Intel RST problem, I don't know for sure, but when the computer starts, during post I can hear the click (only once, if I go to UEFI there is no click there and the drive is detected by BIOS).

I tried some troubleshoots, configured (advanced power management, automatic acoustic management, sata aggressive link power management, windows power management) but nothing worked : (

I'm kinda desperate because I have one "click" each 10 seconds (approximately), it means 3600 load-unload cycles in 10 hours!

For now I made the disks off-line through Windows disk management, until I figure out some solution/workaround.

I appreciate any help you can give!

UPDATE!

The problem was solved by installing Intel RST 12 series drivers, power off, disconnect the PSU cable, connect the affected hard drives on another Z97 Sata port and power on the computer.

If I install Intel RST 13 series driver the issue will return, is this a bug with RST 13 series? I don't think my HDD spending one load/unload cycle each 10 seconds is normal.

Port Multiplier Functionality, Older ICH9M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller?

$

Novice poster here with limited technology knowledge, so be gentle.  Any feedback much appreciated!  I've done a ton of internet searching today and can't seem to find a definitive answer to this question.

I am looking to add a dual-bay eSATA HDD dock to an older notebook computer to increase storage and provide for backups.

Notebook:  Toshiba L505-ES5018, Win7 x64 Home Premium.  Single eSATA port which is enabled.

Controller is (I think), as noted: ICH9M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller with driver version 8.9.2.1002 (8/7/2009).

Question:  With this controller and/or driver, any chance that computer will recognize both bays in the dual eSATA dock?  Dock specs call for eSATA port to support the "port multiplier function."

Thanks for any help!  I'd like (ideally) to figure this out before spending on this docking station or pursuing a different solution.

Replacing a Raid 0 by a single SSD

I would like to replace a Raid 0 of two 1TB hard drives running from a Intel ICH10R controller, installed in a motherboard Asus P6X58D Premiun and relpace it with a SSD.

I plan to clone the Raid 0 with Drive Wire Universal hard drive adapter and Apricorn's EZ GIG IV software, then remove both hard drives from the computer and boot up from the SSD,

my question is: will the SSD boot up from the Intel ICH10R controller with the same Raid setting?, if it boots up may I install both hard drives again, boot from the SSD and delete the Raid and run both hard drives as JBOD?

I don't want to go through the Win 7 and all the applications installation  again, are there any risks in doing this?, I can't find information about how the Intel ICH10R works when creating or deleting a Raid, does it store the the Raid config in the controller? or the config just resides in the Raid or single disk alone.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Thank you.

Overclocking Intel 5520 Chipset on ICH 7/8/9/10 SMBus device and realtek 868 Clockgenerator

I got a bit more rencent CPU - Westmere-EP Xeon X5650 with somewhat decent mainboard (Intel S5520HC - Intel 5520 chipset socket 1336 mainboard ) and since I was not overclocking such CPU on this board cuz its not possible , I would like to get some tips from guys that are sucesfull and know, how to overclock this system

My goal is to overclock and to raise the BCLK from 133 to at least 150 and it should be possible cuz its the same chipset and clockgen like on the evga sr2 motherboard

I tried to use SetFSB but it didnt work cuz the clockgen is not listed

The clockgen was made by Realtek and its a Realtek RTM 868 Clockgenerator

The problem is , i am not able to find any documentation or datasheet and i called the intel and realtek support but they are not allowed to give out any information to regular citizen

There are some server motherboards with ability of overclocking for Socket B and 5520 and 5500 Chipset so i guess it should be possible as well

I tried to write some values into the clockgen but it didnt accept my values

i was able to access the clockgen by accessing the SMBus at SMBus device adress 0xD2 and 0xD3 @ offset 10bytes

this are the default values of the clockgen

3F1E F77F 05FC 201E 0159 16 bit word

the next one below has worked but led into a crash of the system

AAAAAAAA AAAAAAAA 0A0AAAAA AAAAAAAA @offset 24 byte 32bit dword

The next one has worked as well but led into a crash

--> F97D3E1F 421F08FF 00000465 32bit dword @offset 10byte

i dont know where i can find the BCLK .. maybe some1 can help me

3F1E F77F 05FC 201E 0159

i tried to access device 02 by using the Super I/O device @offset 16 32bit dword and 72 @offset 24bytes but i didnt find anyting

i think the easier way would be to to create a custom bios .. i would pay money for it

i just want to raise the baseclock and /or qpi clock and uncore clock

i got an Intel S5520 Hanlan Creek motherboard and 2 x Xeon X5650 CPUs

The SMBus device is an ICH9 or ICH10 SMBus

if you need some information.. send me a message
