Intel RST RAID1 performances various chipset, weird results, needs clarifications

$

Hello,

I need some tech clarification about the RST behavior of recent chipset, specially in raid1.

In this page Intel Rapid Storage Technology (Intel RST) — RAID 0, 1, 5, 10, Matrix RAID, RAID-Ready we can read: "The performance of a RAID 1 array is greater than that of a single drive because data can be read from multiple disks - the original and the mirror - simultaneously. Disk writes do not realize the same benefit because data must first be written to one drive, then mirrored to the other."

Which is true for X58 and X79 (asus motherboards) on which i installed Corsair Performance Series Pro SSDs in raid1 ( just win7 single partition), running crystal disk benchmark on X79 gave me 990MB/s sequential read speed, while on X58 (which is sata2) gave me around 500MB/s, which is infact double the max speed of a single sata channel. So, wow, it really doubles the read speed in raid1!!

Now i tested raid1 on P55, H67, H77 chipset but with standard HDD, seagate 500GB sata3 4k sectors 64MBcache, WD caviar blu 512byte sectors 16MBcache (all brand new, win7 sp1 fresh installed)

Result is quite disappointing, sequential read speed is very floating/spiking, average floating too but got no more than 75MB/s, overall is much slower than such drives tested alone (not member of any array)(around 90MB/s).

I tried diferent iRST drivers versions, with or without write cache enabled, no big diff. A real file transfer from/to single disk to raid1 array gives 50-60MB/s.

I've noticed 1% cpu load, no ram leak of iastor, just the chipset gets very very busy, both in reading or writing.

I thought the array need to be init and verified, i did, no diff.

So, the question: is there something different in X* chipsets about iRST features/performance?

Or, do i need special raid edition disks, like WD RE?

How can i enjoy the "double read speed in raid1"? Do i need X79 chipset or do i need any other raid capable chipset but special raid editin disks?

Thanks for any info, feel free to ask me further details, i can detail till the phy level if needed.

Intel Storage manager not showing sata drives in RAID at all

RapHi,

I have an asrock z87 Pro4 motherboard with win 8.1 installed.

I failed to change the BIOS setting for the SATA from AHCI to RAID and the storage manager doesn't show the drives or the volume.

The OS is installed on a SSD which the RSM can see (along with the atapi drive)

The OS sees the raid fine and it appears to be working ok but one of the drives does sound like it is reinitializing during normal usage, frequency is about once a week to every 2 weeks.

The RSM is popping up an error notification though.

It says that: "Your system is reporting one or more events and data my be at risk."

So it appears that on some level it CAN see the drive's SMART information.

I tried changing the bios setting from ahci to RAID and I get a blue screen every time the pc restarts with the sata set to raid... the only fix it to change it back to ahci.

I have a new drive to replace the failing one but who knows if the array would rebuild properly? (add to that i'm not 100% certain which of the drives is failing)

Worth noting, the array was built in a different computer and both drives were moved to the pc they are in now, this is probably playing a factor in my issue as well.

The only course forward I can see is to wipe my boot partition, change the bios setting, and reinstall win 8.1.... I really don't want to do that though.

OR maybe if I disconnect one drive the RSM would show the remaining one? But then what if the good drive is the one I disconnect and it rebuilds based on the failing drive (which may or may not fail during the rebuild leaving me high and dry)

Getting my RAID array back

I have a PC with an ASUS P8H67-=M PRO motherboard, i5, H67 chipset, and only one add-on board, an ASUS WiFi card. I believe the PC was built in 2011.   I have one standard drive for Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit, with latest updates, and three 1 TB drives organized as RAID 5, using Intel RST.

Thinking it was routine maintenance. I updated my BIOS from the original ASUS Ver. 1003 to the latest, Ver. 3904, using ASUS AI Suite II Update (their Windows System Control Dashboard).  When I rebooted, the ASUS Update asked me to install the BIOS again using Update. Seemed a little unusual, but I figured it was some kind of bootstrapping problem and went ahead.  When I did that, ASUS Update automatically installed all new drivers, including the three drives of the RAID array.  Now Windows sees them as three individual drives and does not recognize the formatting. I tried Windows restore to a date before today, but it did not change the BIOS or Drive configuration.

Rather than poking in the dark and making things worse, I'd like to ask the community to please advise what I can do to get my RAID array and its data back.

Intel RST RAID and Volume with OS System

Hello,

Im installing an Intel RAID on my MB DH57JG, using the RAID RST v.11.0.0.1032.

Im installing 3 HDD with RAID level 5 in order get performance and safety.

All is fine, I tried hot removal of HDD and all is OK.

My question is: if system is suddendly powered OFF (power failure or switch OFF without OS system shut down)

sometimes at next power-on the Array is marked as REBUILDING and Windows OS that is there is NOT

able to complete the boot, due to some sectors that need rebuild... and rebuild need OS running (if i well understand).

Is there any hint about using RAID protection on system disk and avoid this?

As solution I was thinking is to install another (small) disk just for the OS.

This should be working, but unfortunately this disk will be not "protected"

and it will be the "single point failure" that I would like to avoid using RAID.

Thanks for the attention and any suggestion is welcome.

Hello!

We made OS upgrade from Windows Server 2008 R2 to Windows Server 2012 R2 and now there is a such problem:

I can't uninstall Intel Rapid Storage Technology software via Control Panel - Programs and Features:

I choose "Uninstall", then click "Next" - "Next" - window closes and nothing happens.

Is there way to uninstall Intel Rapid Storage Technology manually (via command line or etc) ?

GM45 - HP Compaq 6730s

Hi everyone.

I have a HP Compaq 6730s with a GM45 chipset. On HP's website, it says the max RAM supported is 8GB DDR2 SODIMM 800Mhz 200pins. On the other side, on Intel's website/datasheet about this chipset, it informs support until DDR3 1066Mhz with 204pins. Since they are fisically different, I am quite confused which one I should trust before buying more RAM.

Could someone help me please?

Help with Matrix Storage/RST with PM45 chipset (ICH9M-E/H SATA AHCI)

$

Hi,

This is a compound question touched on by several other individual threads here. I have a Qosmio G50-12K with a Mobile PM45 Express chipset which originally arrived with Vista Ultimate 32bit (soon after delivery, Toshiba sent me upgrade disks for Win 7 Ultimate). This meant that I was thankful to leave Vista and looked for Win7 drivers on the Toshiba site, however it now appears that I never upgraded any Matrix Storage driver beyond 8.9.0.1023 as it is the last driver available.

A few weeks ago, I upgraded the original HDD to a Seagate 1TB hybrid (cloning the Win7 OS) and everything seemed fine, except for some Windows Explorer glitches (Explorer has stopped responding and closed as did programs) though I've been getting these for a good few months already before the migration, My main problem started a few days ago where Windows Update stopped working at all, as did the Windows Troubleshooting functions. Needless to say, I tried all options/solutions with no result, other than I found mention of the need to upgrade the Matrix Storage driver so as to cater to the larger hybrid Seagate disk.

I slowly became aware that Matrix Storage was replaced by RST but still am apprehensive about bunging a new driver in that would make the notebook inoperable, e.g. 12.9.0.1001. My current drivers in Device Manager are:

Mobile Intel 4 Series Chipset PCI Express Root Port - 2A41: 9.1.0.1003
Mobile Intel 4 Series Chipset Processor to DRAM Controller - 2A40: 9.1.0.1003

ICH9M-E/H SATA AHCI Controller: 8.9.0.1023

ICH9 Family Port Controllers 1-6: 8.6.1.1002

Can somebody please advise how I should go about updating drivers in order to exploit full functionality, with a view to upgrading current OS

to an SSD along with a dual boot 64bit Win7. I'm avoiding Win 8 until I buy a new laptop or until it's ironed out/superseded by an XP/Win7 equivalent. There is little point in posting on the Toshiba forum at this stage because the closest post that comes to addressing my problem has been closed: Toshiba Support Forums: Qosmio G50-129 - Can't run Windows 7 ....

Recover data from RAID0 with Intel Matrix Storage Manager

$

Hi, I have a Dell XPS400 machine, with Win XP on a two-disk RAID0. Each disk is 149GB so the total capacity is 298GB. I think the system has a Intel hardware RAID, with Intel Matrix Storage Manager option ROM v7.6.1.1001 ICH9R.

Some time ago, the system went into hibernate, as it has many times. However, this time, when I woke it up, it failed. In the RAID Bios it says that the status of the Raid volume is "Failed". Only one of the two physical harddrives is now a "Member Disk", the other is a "Non-Raid Disk".

I am not sure what is wrong - is it the harddrive that has failed, or the Raid controller?

My main goal is to recreate the data on the drives - mainly pictures. I have played a little with the data recovery software R-Tools. I am able to make file images of both harddrives. However, when I try to combine the two images in R-Tool, to get the data back, I am not able to get it right. Small pictures less than the stripe size of 128kB come out good. However, larger pictures do not come out right - some are corrupted, some are not corrupted but they seem like they are composed of stripes of two separate pictures. So I think I have some Raid offset between the two harddrives wrong. Would it be possible to get the details as to how the Raid0 is set up? So that I may be able to combine the two harddrive images correctly?

Attached is a photograph of the Raid Bios error message.

And im asking this cause in other ocassions it doesn't and the array finish like this:

(dont mind the numbers the next image is taken from a different PC, i only want to show that there is only 1 volume here not 2).

I have a bunch of laptops with a HDD and a small SSD for cache and using the RST software for this. I need to enable the cache after the image is deployed but can't find any newer versions of the CLI. The only version I can find is 11.7 which I've used fine for the last year but since 12.x is out now I'd like to move up. If there is a different way of doing this now please let me know. Thanks!

Intel Rapid Start Technology Problem

$

(Lenovo U410 touch - Windows 8.1)

I started having trouble a week ago when my laptop crashed and on starting up, gave me an error message stating that'Intel Rapid Start Technology is not enabled'. The system also began crashing everytime it went to sleep (and the start up took a bit longer than before). Each time I started the laptop up, the same error message popped up.

At one point during start up, a blue screen came up stating there was a 'Driver power state error'

I've manually updated all my drivers just in case (didn't work).

On trying to install the latest 'Intel Rapid Start Technology Driver', it fails, giving the error message: 'This computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing the software'.

I eventually uninstalled 'Intel Rapid Start Technology' (from the control panel) and the error message (first paragraph) stopped popping up.

The laptop is still unable to sleep without crashing.

Any ideas?

Or should I wait around and hope the next round of updates sorts everything out? (any idea how long that would take?)

Thanks,

ICH9M/M-E Family 4 Port SATA AHCI Controller Driver update - Windows 7 64-bit

Hello,

As the discussion tread title says, I am trying to update my ICH9M/M-E Family 4 Port SATA AHCI Controller on my Windows 7 64-bit laptop with the Intel GM45 Express Chipset. The reason for this is because of performance/ATAPI errors. I have downloaded a file set from Intel download pages, but I would like to take things from start to explain my confusion.

Before using the file set I downloaded from Intel it said in Device manager "Intel(R) ICH9M/M-E Family 4 Port SATA AHCI Controller - 2929", and as "Driver Provider" it said Intel. But when pressing the "Driver Details" button all four drivers are listed with Microsoft as provider. Do anyone know why this is? The files were atapi.sys, ataport.sys, msahci.sys and pciidex.sys.

Then when I updated the drivers with the file set "RST_11.6.0.1030_RAID_AHCI_driver_GUI_CLI_2012.10.11" (RST and AHCI Driver and GUI), it now says "Inte(R) ICH9M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller", but with only two files listed when pressing the "Driver Details" button. These are iaStorA.sys and iaStorF.sys . I chose the mentioned file set, because it said on the download page that it supported the "Intel® 5 Series 4 Port SATA AHCI Controller".

Can anyone please tell me why this is and if everything is okay?

Thank you.

Best regards,

Laurus

Intel Management Engine Driver Won't Install

$

I have an Asus X79-Deluxe motherboard with an i7-4930 processor and of course an X79 chipset.

The drivers for the chipset install without issues but the MEI drivers will not install.   I get a message that the computer does not meet the minimum requirements for the software.    In the Bios there is a listing for ME but it says N/A.   I don't see any options in the bios to activate or in anyway configure ME.   I assume ME is the Management Engine and that either there is a bad chip or firmware which causes the issue with not being able to install the drivers.    Is there a way to fix this problem or at least confirm if it is a hardware or software issue??
