Why no X79 RAID support with Intel's RST(e) v11/v12 series drivers?

$

Many users with an X79 chipset RAID system are already using the Intel RST(e) v11 or v12 series drivers instead of the regular RSTe v3.x.x.xxxx ones, because the v11/v12 drivers obviously

  • are running rock stable with X79 RAID systems,
  • boost the X79 RAID performance and
  • give X79 RAID0 users the chance to get TRIM into their RAID array.

Only disadvantages:

  1. There are no F6 Intel RAID drivers v11/v12 available, which can be used by X79 chipset RAID users, who want to do a fresh install of Windows 8 in EFI mode.
  2. The driver installation from within an already running Windows OS has to be forced, because the DEV_2826 support is missing within the original iaStorAC.inf file.
  3. Unfortunately the RST Console software v11/v12 series cannot be installed at all due to the missing support of the "Intel(R) C600 Series Chipset SATA RAID Controller". Bad consequence: The popular feature "Write Back Caching", which gives RAID users a far better write performance, can not be enabled,

Since the original Intel RST(e) drivers of the v11 and v12 series do already support C600 Series Chipset SATA AHCI Controllers, it would be a good idea, if Intel would add the native support of the related SATA RAID Controllers as well.

Question:

What is the reason why the support of Intel's C600 Series Chipset SATA RAID Controllers is missing within the actual RST(e) driverpacks of the v11.x.x.xxxx and v12.x.x.xxxx series?

X79 IRSTe Constant Parity/Verification Errors

Hi

I have recently put together a server using a X79 Workstation board. The machine was fine for 2 weeks then out of no where the raid 1 fell over. One of the disks could boot the other couldnt. Both disks are Samsung Evo 250gb SSD.

When I rebuilt the array and did some reboots I noticed approximately 10-300 parity/verification errors. If I ran the test twice the 2nd time it would have less errors.

After a few hours i do the verification again and it still gets errors.

I am using the latest driver for the C600 chipset driver and cannot seem to understand why the errors continue to come.

Any help is really appreciated.

IRST 11.7 interface crashing.

I updated my asus mobo bios and im running irst 11.2, the bios says supports 11.2 all this under windows 7 32 bits.

Today i installed windows 7 64 bits now i wonder if i could be able to run irst 11,7?

somebody knows if the bios has to match the irst version? I tried to run 11.7 under windows 7 32 bits and the interface crashed all the time.

Intel RST RAID1 performances various chipset, weird results, needs clarifications

Hello,

I need some tech clarification about the RST behavior of recent chipset, specially in raid1.

In this page Intel Rapid Storage Technology (Intel RST) — RAID 0, 1, 5, 10, Matrix RAID, RAID-Ready we can read: "The performance of a RAID 1 array is greater than that of a single drive because data can be read from multiple disks - the original and the mirror - simultaneously. Disk writes do not realize the same benefit because data must first be written to one drive, then mirrored to the other."

Which is true for X58 and X79 (asus motherboards) on which i installed Corsair Performance Series Pro SSDs in raid1 ( just win7 single partition), running crystal disk benchmark on X79 gave me 990MB/s sequential read speed, while on X58 (which is sata2) gave me around 500MB/s, which is infact double the max speed of a single sata channel. So, wow, it really doubles the read speed in raid1!!

Now i tested raid1 on P55, H67, H77 chipset but with standard HDD, seagate 500GB sata3 4k sectors 64MBcache, WD caviar blu 512byte sectors 16MBcache (all brand new, win7 sp1 fresh installed)

Result is quite disappointing, sequential read speed is very floating/spiking, average floating too but got no more than 75MB/s, overall is much slower than such drives tested alone (not member of any array)(around 90MB/s).

I tried diferent iRST drivers versions, with or without write cache enabled, no big diff. A real file transfer from/to single disk to raid1 array gives 50-60MB/s.

I've noticed 1% cpu load, no ram leak of iastor, just the chipset gets very very busy, both in reading or writing.

I thought the array need to be init and verified, i did, no diff.

So, the question: is there something different in X* chipsets about iRST features/performance?

Or, do i need special raid edition disks, like WD RE?

How can i enjoy the "double read speed in raid1"? Do i need X79 chipset or do i need any other raid capable chipset but special raid editin disks?

Thanks for any info, feel free to ask me further details, i can detail till the phy level if needed.

HP Z420 with a raid1 ( 2*2TB ) managed by Intel Rapid Enterprise Storage , but somehow the disks are regulary synchronizing , and that takes away a lot of the performance of the pc, any clue why this process every time starts? and how to prevent this

Hey everyone... I have an issue with my RAID 10 setup on Intel RST.  Has anyone ever seen something like this?

Write-through is enabled.  This is on an Asus Maximus-IV Gene-Z with 4 x 2TB Hitachi Deskstars.  I haven't yet been able to find anything to explain this behaviour.

Intel Rapid Storage Controller RAID 0 Expansion did not complete

Hi

I am using a motherboard with an Intel Rapid Storage Controller. I had a raid 0 array with 2 x 2TB disks. I added another 2TB disk to make it a 6TB volume. It started the process of migrating data. I am not sure if it finished or not as when I woke up in the morning, I had a message saying the array had failed. All 3 disks were healthy and in the array, so there was no hardware failure.

I set the array to normal as suggested by the software which bought the array online. However it only showed a size of 4TB (despite having all 3 2TB disks in the array). Windows did not see the array. On reboot Windows ran Checkdisk and my disk came back online with all files there, although I can not read any files, when I open them with a program it says file invalid or something similar (appears as if files are corrupt).

I assume this is because some of the data is on the 3rd disk which is not seen as part of the array and because both Windows and the Intel Rapid Storage controller only think it is a 4TB volume the other 3rd of the data is the other disk. How do I complete the migration to a 6TB volume and access the data? The intel rapid storage controller things the array is healthy and all members are, I can't see any option to continue the migration?

See the screenshot.

Message was edited by: Dominic Dearman Some added information. In the Rapid Storage interface in Windows the array shows the correct size (6TB), but the volume shows 4TB and there is no free space to create or extended the volume. Windows also thinks there is no free space. How can I make the volume size match the array, see the screen shot attached

Intel Rapid Storage Technology - Unknown Error - Unable to reinstall/uninstall/run

Hi,

I have the latest Intel RST and it was running just fine until couple days ago. I see the icon on notification area and it says service is not running. When I try to open RST, I receive an error with message "An unknown error occurred while running this application. If the problem persists, please restart your computer or try reinstalling the application."

So I restarted and nothing changed. I tried reinstalling and I got this: "The setup program ended prematurely because if the following error: Fatal error during installation."

When I try to uninstall, I get the same error.

I booted into safe mode, activated "Windows Installer Service" and tried reinstalling/uninstalling again and it does not work. Same error. Disabling Kaspersky antivirus doesn't change anything.

So I can't fix it, can't run it, can't uninstall it.

Does anyone know what I could try to make it work again? Am I missing something?

Log files are attached.

Thanks,

Info on my system:

Help: "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered"

Hi everyone,

I know this issue has been posted dozens of times however I've attempted to find a fix to this problem and I still cannot find any solutions.

I recently purchased a Gateway NV54 laptop second hand as a gift for my brother.

I started to download various programs (avg, itunes, etc) when all of a sudden the screen goes blank for 1-3 seconds and then a windows error message appears:

"Display driver stopped responding and has recovered"

"Display driver Intel Graphics Accelerator Drivers for Windows 7(R) stopped responding and has successfully recovered."

I have no idea if this issue was the reason why the seller put the laptop for sale to begin with, but I would imagine it is.

The error only happens when the computer is doing various tasks. I can replicate the error by running a computer virus scan using AVG, and opening multiple internet windows in chrome.

From what I've seen in other forums it looks to be a out of date or corrupted chip set driver. I've downloaded the most recent driver on the gateway website, and the error still persists. I've also increased the GPU processing time to 8 as advised by microsoft. This had no effect.

The only odd thing I can think of is the seller changed the hard drive from the stock 500gb, to what looks to be like a generic 100gb drive.

Does anyone have any helpful information, or advice?

Thank you in advance.

Nick

Update of Intel® RST driver fails with Windows 7 64-bit

I have Intel DH67GD motherboard with 4 SATA devices: Intel SSD, 2 x Seagate HD (RAID1) and BluRay drive. It is running fine with 10.6.0.1002 version of RST driver. When I upgraded the driver to the newest version (12.8.0.1016), Intel RST application would crash on start. Do I need a new version of Intel RST application? If so, where can I find it?

Accidently Created Volume/Array

Hello,

I am looking for some assistance regarding a recently installed 1TB drive that I installed into my computer.  It was supposed to suppliment the existing 1TB drive that I already had installed.  However, unknowingly, the Intel Rapid Storage Technology software started and created a Recovery Volume (this is something new to me so I appologize if I am not using the proper terms).  Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Currently:  Under the Manage Disk screen of the software, I can since a single Array, Volume_0000 is made up of two 954GB drives but the entire volume, of type Recovery, is 954GB.

Desired:  What I wanted to to continue to have the 954GB C drive and add the 2nd 954GB drive to drive D, giving me two 954GB drives to store a variety of files on.  Obviously I want to keep was is on the original drive and would want the new drive to be empty ready for use.

One point of clarrification needed.  Am I correct in assuming that the Master disk was the disk that was originally in my computer while the Recovery disk is the new disk?

Thanks in advance,

Nick

Best chipset for a specific task?, and maybe a configuration advice. Thank you!

Hello, everybody.

I've googled and read about different types of chipsets for a couple of days, but the info I've found confused me. Then I thought it'd be more likely to find an answer right on the producer's community page. How brilliant is that! I sometimes amaze myself.

The computer will be used exclusively for multiple parallel FullHD Live Video streaming (uploading). I've read I won't be necessarily needing a GPU, but rather a good CPU and RAM. Since I am on a budget limit, I'm planning to buy an i5-4570 3,2GHz CPU and 2x4GB DDR3-1600MHz.

So, if you'd please be kind enough to share your knowledge, here are my three questions:

*** 1 ***

I've read there are "consumer" chipsets (Z87, H87, H81), and business chipsets (Q87, Q85, B85). I've also read about the different Intel features each supports (e.g. vPro, IPT, iSIPP, RST12, TinyLake, SBA), but I'm not sure if any of those features would influence my PC's performance given its destination.

Furthermore, besides those features, do all 6 chipsets work the same (as far as CPU performance and RAM performance goes, and also how they communicate to each-other), or would a specific chipset perform better the given task?

*** 2 ***

Is it true that the Haswell (or IvyBridge) integrated graphics will suffice, or should I buy a low end / mid-range / high-end GPU?

*** 3 ***

Will using a SSD instead of a HDD help during the video streaming? I know they're faster for reading and writing info, opening and closing programs, but are those actions involved during the video streaming, and, if they are, do they influence the quality of the streaming?

... that would be it.

Thank you very much for taking the time to read, and I'm looking forward to your replies / advices.

Kind regards.

Cannot enable automatic rebuild in RST with Q35

We have a board with a Q35 chipset and a RAID1 configuration made of hotswap disks. When we plug a new disk without rebooting, we are not allowed to add it to the raid array, nor enable the automatic rebuild. If we reboot the computer, it starts to rebuild correctly the array. Intel Matrix Storage Console 8.9 - RAID 5 array showing degraded with SMART event

Hi,

I have a customer who has a small old server with a RAID 5 array of 4 drives.  The server is running Windows 2008 server with Intel Matrix Storage Console 8.9 installed.

The array is showing as 'Degraded' - per attached screenshots.

One of the Drives is reporting a SMART event - per the other screenshot

Is it OK to just replace the drive with the SMART event ?  Will the RAID 5 array automatically rebuild after that ?

Or is there something else that needs to be done ?

SATA RAID Controller update

The Intel Driver Update Utility provides a dead link of http://downloadmirror.intel.com/21852/a08/iata_cd.exe for downloading Intel(R) ICH8R/ICH9R/ICH10R/DO/5/3400/6 Series SATA RAID Controller version 11.6.0.1030.  What is the correct download link for this SATA RAID controller update?

I've installed a 4TB SATA internal drive on my Intel based computer.  The drive does not show up in Windows Explorer, but it does show up fine in the HP Diagnostics Tests in Windows 7 x64.   I suspect that the updated SATA RAID controller will solve the problem, but I cannot find the correct download location on your website.  What is the correct link?

when i uninstall "Intel Rapid Storage Technology" all my DVDs worke fine , the drive dont read them when this program is installed!

unless i run this everytime!!! Fix problems with CD or DVD drives that can’t read or write media

i searched for a solution for a long time , and i just found those (running "fix it everytime" or uninstalling IRST) in different website forums , but they r not good solutions only temporary . waiting for a fix from intel!

i hope intel addresses this issue soon as i cant just uninstall Intel Rapid Storage Technology in order for my drive to work cause its important for other parts in my laptop to work properly!

OS:          Windows 8.1

my laptop: MSI GT70 0nd

drive:        TSSTcorp DVDWBD SN-406AB (via ATAPI)

IRST ver:     12.8.0.1016

is there a permanent solution for this ?

Intel RST crashing Windows 7 64-bit

Hi guys,

New here - because I've never had a problem like this before!

I recently started having my machine power cycle fairly randomly after more than a year of rock steady stability. This started after installing a bunch of optional updates from Microsoft. I did a bunch of reading around and eventually narrowed it down to compatibility problem with the Intel RST drivers and GUI. The Windows service was sitting there constantly churning at the CPU, making it run a little hot, but not hot enough to cause a power cycle. Anyway, I've made sure I've got the latest Intel RST drivers installed, but I've uninstalled the GUI and Windows service. Things now seem to be stable and all my drives are working fine. I've not tested performance properly though.

What I'd like to know, if possible, is whether a) this whole scenario sounds likely, b) should I work to get the GUI and Windows service back (am I really missing out by not having them?) and c), if so, how to go about doing that? I've got a bunch of devices attached to the controller, including a RAID1 and an OCZ Agility3 SSD. Motherboard's an Asus P8P67 Pro, chip's an Intel i7 2600k 3.4 GHz (no over clocking going on). This is the first problem I've had with the system.

I'd really appreciate any help, thanks!

The mSATA SSD cache of Intel SRT doesn't work on Windows 8.1

Dell XPS 14 (l421x) + Windows 8.1 Pro

BIOS Settings: Intel Rapid Storage, UEFI, Secure Boot Mode is activated.

I've been installed the latest Intel SRT drivers (version 12.8.0.1016). But in this app the optimization option doesn't appear at all.

I'm parted my 30Gb SSD to 8Gb (id=84) + 22Gb (cache) but I see in app only 30Gb and can't do anything with it.

Windows 8 was work is perfectly!

Have you ideas what's wrong?

Thank you.
