Issue Description:

Intel SMBus Controller device drivers are overwritten with Intel Chipset Device Software when updated through Microsoft Windows Update, causing loss of functionality for some impacted Intel SMBus Controller devices. This applies to Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and Windows Server systems.

Products Affected:

Intel® PCH SMBus Controller with the following hardware device IDs

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1C22

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1D22

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1E22

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_8C22

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_8CA2

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_9C22

Intel® Chipset Device Software version 10.1.1.38

Intel® Server Chipset Driver version 10.1.2.80

Intel® SMBus 2.0 Driver

Customer Impact:

Users impacted by this issue may experience loss of functionality of the listed Intel SMBus Controller devices.

The SMBus is used for system management communications.  If the device driver for the Intel SMBus Controller is not correctly installed, the temperature reporting, as an example,  for the processor, PCH and/or memory modules may not function as expected.

Root Cause:

The existing Intel SMBus Controller device drivers are overwritten with the Intel Chipset Device Software, that provides the operating system with information about the device/hardware. This allows the operating system to display the correct product name for that piece of hardware in Device Manager.  The Intel Chipset Device Software does not  install device drivers for the Intel SMBus Controller, resulting in a loss of device functionality.

Recommendations:

  1. Roll back to the previous Intel SMBus Controller device driver
    1. Open Device Manager, click Start > Control Panel > Device Manager
    2. Select View > Devices by Type
    3. Expand System Devices
    4. Double-click SMBus device
    5. Select the Driver tab
    6. Click Roll Back Driver to restore
    7. Reboot the system

  1. The SMBus device driver may need to be re-installed
    1. Intel Desktop or Server Boards:  download and install Intel® Desktop Utilities
      https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/20488.
    2. Or contact your computer manufacturer for the SMBus driver appropriate for your system.

  1. Optional:   Install updated Intel® Chipset Device Software  or Intel® Server Chipset Driver from Windows Update
    1. Open Device Manager, click Start > Control Panel > Device Manage
    2. Select View > Devices by Type
    3. Expand System Devices
    4. Double-click the Intel chipset device from the list
    5. Select the Driver tab
