Using Raid 1 member drive as a temporary backup

My boot drive is a 2-drive RAID-1 volume created with RST and it is working fine.  I want to do an Operating System (OS) upgrade but before I want to keep one of the drives as a "backup drive".  If everything goes Ok with the upgrade I want to rebuild the RAID-1  overwriting the "backup drive" (old OS) with the data in the other drive (new OS).  If things don't go Ok I would like to rebuild the RAID-1 overwritting the other drive (new OS) with the content of the "backup drive" (old OS).  What are the correct steps I need to follow for this?

Thanks,

Rafael.
